Aregbesola Calls for Greater Focus on Boy-Child Development
Former Osun State Governor and ex-Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has called for increased attention to the development and empowerment of the boy-child, stressing the need for a balanced approach to child development in society.
Aregbesola said that while several advocacy initiatives have focused on empowering the girl-child over the years, there is also a growing need to ensure that the boy-child receives adequate guidance, mentorship, and opportunities for growth.
According to him, sustainable societal development requires equal attention to both boys and girls, noting that neglecting the boy-child could create social challenges in the future.
He explained that many young boys face increasing social pressures and require proper support systems to help them develop into responsible and productive members of society.
The former governor urged parents, educators, community leaders and policymakers to invest more in mentoring young boys and instilling in them the right values, discipline and sense of responsibility.
He emphasised that the family remains the first institution responsible for shaping the character and future of children, adding that parents must play an active role in guiding their sons and helping them develop positive attitudes towards education, leadership and community service.
Aregbesola also highlighted the importance of education and mentorship programmes designed to equip young boys with leadership skills and moral values that will enable them to contribute meaningfully to national development.
He further noted that advocating for the empowerment of the boy-child should not be seen as competing with efforts to promote the girl-child, but rather as a complementary effort aimed at ensuring that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
The former minister therefore called on relevant stakeholders in the education and social sectors to collaborate in developing programmes and policies that will support the growth and development of young boys across the country.
