Lagos Government Investigates Socialite’s Death After Cosmetic Surgery

The Lagos State Government has commenced an investigation into the death of a Lagos-based socialite popularly known as Elena following a cosmetic procedure known as a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) at a clinic in the state.
The investigation is being carried out by the Lagos State Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to reports circulating on social media, the woman allegedly developed complications during or shortly after undergoing the cosmetic procedure.
In a statement on Thursday, the Permanent Secretary of HEFAMAA, Dr. Abiola Idowu, assured the public that authorities would conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the matter.
She stated that preliminary findings indicate that the clinic where the surgery reportedly took place is registered with the agency. However, she stressed that registration does not exempt any health facility from regulatory scrutiny, especially in cases involving patient safety.
Idowu explained that the agency has begun a detailed review of the case, which includes verifying the professional credentials of the medical personnel involved, assessing the standard of care provided before, during and after the procedure, and determining whether the facility complied with regulatory guidelines governing cosmetic surgeries in the state.
She added that aesthetic and cosmetic procedures in Lagos are regulated under strict guidelines covering facility standards, practitioner qualifications, infection control measures, patient consent, anaesthetic safety and emergency response capacity.
The Lagos State Government also urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could interfere with the ongoing investigation.
Authorities further advised members of the public to patronise only accredited health facilities for cosmetic or aesthetic procedures, reiterating the government’s commitment to ensuring patient safety through strict monitoring and regulation of healthcare institutions.
The government said further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
