21 Feared Dead, 37 Abducted as Bandits Attack Sokoto, Plateau Communities
At least 21 people have been feared killed, while 37 others were reportedly abducted following coordinated attacks by suspected bandits on communities in Sokoto and Plateau states, raising fresh concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of northern Nigeria.
According to local sources, the attackers invaded several communities, opening fire on residents before abducting dozens of people, including women and children. The assaults forced many villagers to flee their homes as the gunmen operated for hours.
Security agencies were reportedly deployed to the affected areas after receiving distress calls, while search-and-rescue operations have commenced to track down the attackers and secure the release of those kidnapped. Authorities are also working to restore calm in the affected communities.
Community leaders and residents have appealed to the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen military operations and improve surveillance in vulnerable areas to prevent further attacks. They also called for increased security presence to protect lives and property.
The latest attacks underscore the persistent security challenges confronting several parts of northern Nigeria, where banditry, kidnappings and violent attacks continue to threaten rural communities despite ongoing counter-insurgency and anti-bandit operations by security forces.
