2027 Politics: Babachir Lawal Quits ADC, Alleges Primary Manipulation and Attacks Atiku’s Leadership

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing alleged irregularities in the party’s presidential primary and expressing strong opposition to the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s flagbearer for the 2027 presidential election.
Lawal accused the ADC leadership of conducting a flawed primary process that allegedly favoured Atiku, claiming that results were manipulated to secure his victory. He argued that the exercise failed to reflect the democratic aspirations of party members and described the process as unacceptable.
In a strongly worded statement, the former SGF said he could no longer remain in a party where he believed internal democratic principles had been compromised. He further alleged that supporting Atiku’s presidential ambition would not provide the alternative leadership many Nigerians are seeking ahead of the 2027 general election.
Lawal also criticized what he described as the political direction of Atiku’s camp, accusing some of his associates of pursuing sectional interests rather than promoting national unity and inclusive governance. He maintained that Nigeria needs leaders capable of addressing the country’s economic and security challenges without ethnic or religious considerations.
The former APC chieftain stated that his decision was guided by personal conviction and his belief that Nigeria deserves a leadership model built on transparency, competence, and accountability. He said he would continue consulting with political associates and stakeholders on the way forward ahead of the 2027 elections.
Lawal’s resignation adds another layer of controversy to the opposition political landscape as parties prepare for the next electoral cycle. His departure is expected to generate fresh debates within the ADC and among opposition figures seeking to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
Meanwhile, the ADC had yet to issue an official response to the allegations at the time of filing this report. Reports also indicate that some party members have disputed Lawal’s claims, insisting that the primary process was conducted in line with party guidelines.
