WAFCON 2026: Unfulfilled $100,000 Reward Promise Raises Concern in Super Falcons Camp
The Federal Government’s delay in fulfilling its promise of a $100,000 cash reward to each Super Falcons player has reportedly created concerns within the team’s camp as Nigeria prepares to defend its Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco.
The reward package, announced after the Super Falcons won their record-extending 10th WAFCON title, also included three-bedroom houses and national honours for the players and members of the technical crew. While government officials had assured that the incentives were being processed, the players have yet to receive the cash rewards as preparations for the continental tournament intensify.
Former Super Falcons players have expressed concern that the prolonged delay could affect the morale of the team ahead of the championship. They urged the Federal Government to redeem its pledge, stressing that adequate motivation remains essential for athletes representing the country on the international stage.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) attributed the delay to administrative procedures and the rescheduling of the team’s camping programme, while reiterating that the government remains committed to delivering the promised rewards.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the incentives, the Super Falcons remain focused on their quest for a record-extending 11th WAFCON title, with expectations high that the outstanding promises will be fulfilled as the tournament progresses.
