Tensions Rise in Plateau as Fresh Protests Erupt Over Rising Killings by Suspected Militants
Fresh protests erupted on Monday in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, as locals took to the streets in response to the ongoing killings of indigenous residents by suspected Fulani militants. The demonstrations, which were organized by Christian leaders, including the Plateau chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), took place at the Fawvwei Junction community road, leading to severe traffic gridlocks and leaving many commuters stranded.
The protests were sparked by a recent upsurge in violent attacks on communities in Plateau, particularly in Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas, where over 100 lives have been lost in the past two weeks.
“We are not happy over the continuous attacks and killings by gunmen in our communities. That’s why we have come out again to protest these happenings,” said Gyang Dalyop, one of the demonstrators.
Hannatu Philip, another protester, voiced concerns about the situation, urging the government to intervene before the violence spirals further out of control. The protesters, carrying placards with various inscriptions, marched towards the Rayfield Government House, demanding immediate action from the authorities.
The protests underscore growing frustration and fear within the communities of Plateau State as they continue to face targeted attacks by gunmen, with calls for more security measures to protect the residents from further bloodshed.
