Quadri Aruna Exits ITTF World Cup After 10th Straight Defeat Amid Questions on Future
Quadri Aruna’s campaign at the 2026 ITTF World Cup came to an early end after a straight-sets defeat to Japan’s Sora Matsushima, extending his winless run to 10 consecutive losses on the global stage.
The Nigerian star, seeking a turnaround in his final Group 6 match in Macao, was outplayed by the world number eight, who secured a dominant 3‑0 victory (12‑10, 11‑3, 11‑5) in just over 17 minutes. With only the group winner advancing to the knockout stages, Aruna’s loss confirmed his exit from the tournament.
Aruna had entered the match under pressure, having suffered a straight‑sets defeat to Croatia’s Tomislav Pucar in his opening game. Despite his experience, he was unable to mount a response against Matsushima, who controlled play throughout and limited Aruna to just 18 points overall.
The veteran athlete, who remains the only African player to reach a World Cup quarter-final—a feat achieved in 2014—was Nigeria’s sole representative at this year’s tournament. His early departure not only ends Nigeria’s campaign in Macao but also raises fresh questions about his form and prospects ahead of the 2026 World Team Table Tennis Championships in London later this month.
The extended stretch of losses has intensified public debate over whether Aruna, once ranked among the world’s top table tennis players, can reclaim his peak performance on the international circuit.
