Rivers Assembly Members Advocate Dialogue Amid Fubara–Wike Political Tension
Amid the lingering political crisis in Rivers State, more lawmakers have thrown their weight behind calls for reconciliation and dialogue, urging political actors to de-escalate tensions and prioritize the stability of the state.
The dispute, which has dominated the state’s political landscape, stems from a prolonged rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor and political ally, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The feud has strained relations within the executive and legislative arms of government and disrupted governance.
Several members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have expressed concern that continued hostilities, including threats of impeachment and political brinkmanship, could further polarize the state and undermine legislative responsibilities. They emphasized that peaceful engagement remains the best path toward resolving the impasse.
According to the lawmakers, reconciliation would help restore trust, enable effective lawmaking, and allow the government to refocus on service delivery and development for the people of Rivers State.
Traditional rulers and other stakeholders have also stepped into the situation, initiating peace efforts aimed at mediating between the opposing camps and finding a lasting solution to the political standoff.
