Customs Uncovers 399 Rifles Concealed in Shipment at Tin Can Island Port
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a shipment containing 399 rifles allegedly concealed among imported goods at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos, in what authorities described as a major breakthrough in efforts to curb illegal arms trafficking into Nigeria.
The discovery was made during a routine examination of a container by officers of the Tin Can Island Port Command, following intelligence and heightened surveillance of cargo entering the country through the seaport.
According to the Customs Service, the weapons were carefully concealed in the shipment in an apparent attempt to evade detection and security checks at the port.
Customs officials subsequently subjected the container to a comprehensive inspection, leading to the recovery of hundreds of rifles and other items connected with the shipment.
The interception has raised fresh concerns over the illegal movement of firearms into Nigeria at a time security agencies are intensifying operations against banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, armed robbery and other violent crimes across the country.
The NCS said investigations had commenced to establish the origin and intended destination of the shipment as well as identify individuals or organisations connected to the attempted importation.
Relevant security and law enforcement agencies are expected to collaborate with Customs as investigations continue, particularly in tracing those behind the consignment and determining whether the weapons were intended for criminal networks operating within the country.
The latest seizure underscores the strategic importance of Nigeria’s seaports in the fight against arms proliferation and other forms of transnational organised crime.
Customs authorities have repeatedly warned importers and clearing agents against attempts to circumvent the country’s import regulations, maintaining that improved intelligence gathering, cargo profiling and physical examination would continue to be deployed to detect prohibited goods.
The NCS also reiterated its commitment to securing Nigeria’s borders and ports while facilitating legitimate trade, assuring Nigerians that officers would continue to intensify surveillance to prevent dangerous and prohibited items from entering the country.
Investigations into the 399 rifles recovered at Tin Can Island Port are ongoing, with further details expected as security agencies work to unravel the circumstances surrounding the shipment.
