Adelabu Denies Resignation Rumours, Signals Retreat from Oyo Governorship Race
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has dismissed reports claiming he resigned from his position to pursue a governorship ambition, describing the claims as false and misleading.
Through his media aide, the minister maintained that he remains fully in office and urged the public to disregard the rumours, stressing the importance of accurate information in the public space.
The speculation had suggested that Adelabu stepped down in compliance with the directive issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, mandating all political appointees seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31.
The directive, aligned with provisions of the Electoral Act and the timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was introduced to ensure transparency and fairness in the political process.
However, Adelabu’s decision not to resign before the deadline appears to carry significant political implications. Analysts suggest it may indicate that he has effectively stepped back from his speculated governorship ambition in Oyo State.
His failure to comply with the resignation directive—unlike some of his counterparts—points to signs that the political landscape may not be in his favour, raising doubts about the strength and viability of his ambition within the ruling party.
The development reflects the shifting dynamics and strategic recalibrations among key political actors as the build-up to the 2027 general elections gathers momentum.
