“No Going Back!” Oyo Pensioners Vow Showdown Against Any Post-Makinde Rollback
The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) in Oyo State has issued a firm warning against any attempt to reverse the progress made under Governor Seyi Makinde after his tenure ends in 2027.
The union’s Secretary in the state, Dr. Olusegun Abatan, said pensioners would strongly resist policies capable of dragging Oyo back to what he described as the “dark days” of unpaid entitlements and hardship experienced before the current administration.
From Hardship to Stability
Abatan recalled that prior to the present government, many retirees faced severe challenges due to irregular and incomplete pension payments. He noted that the situation led to widespread suffering, with some pensioners unable to meet basic needs.
He, however, stated that the introduction of consistent and full pension payments under Governor Seyi Makinde has significantly improved the welfare of retirees across the state.
According to him, pensions are now paid regularly, and the previous system of percentage payments has been scrapped, restoring dignity and financial stability to pensioners.
Reforms Pensioners Won’t Let Go
The NUP leader emphasized that the current system has brought relief and predictability, allowing retirees to better plan their lives. He added that improved welfare measures have also had a positive ripple effect on the local economy.
He stressed that pensioners, alongside labour unions, are prepared to mobilize against any future administration that attempts to tamper with these gains.
Strong Warning Ahead of 2027
Looking ahead, Abatan made it clear that pensioners will not remain passive if policies begin to undermine their welfare.
He warned that retirees form a significant voting bloc and would use their collective strength to resist any government that fails to prioritize their needs.
Concerns Over Rising Living Costs
Despite the progress recorded, he raised concerns about the rising cost of living, noting that pensioners remain vulnerable to economic pressures.
He called on governments at all levels to introduce policies that will cushion the effects of inflation and improve living standards for retirees and workers alike.
