NANS begins International Students Day, commends Gov. Sanwo-Olu’s stride in education


The National Association of Nigerian Students in Lagos state has announced its Lagos students week, which is scheduled to begin on November 15th, 2021.
The NANS chairman in the state, Comrade Rasheed Ogunsanya in a statement made available to newsmen said the Lagos Students week is in line with the international students day which is celebrated worldwide.
Ogunsanya explained that the one-week celebration with a theme: “Student Unionism: Pathway to a Democratic and United Nigeria” will take place between November 15th and November 18th, 2021.
He explained that programmes such as students summit, leadership awards, an essay competition, an awareness walk, among others are activities outlined to commemorate the international students day.
He added, “last year, our administration has been able to improve the effect programs and activities towards the development of Students in the state.
“We organised the Lagos Students Security Summit last year, facilitated the distribution of Sienna buses to all student unions in the state, and collaborated with YCMA to train our student leaders in the state.
“We actively participated in the fight to reduce school fees at Lagos State University, and we represented the state at both zonal and national programmes.”
The NANS chairman however commended the Sanwo-Olu led-administration for increasing the education budget in the state.
According to him, the leadership is pleased with the increase in budget for education in Lagos state, as well as His Excellency Gov. Babjide Sanwolu’s ongoing efforts through the office of Special Adviser on Education Mr Tokunbo Wahab, which have seen institutions in the state compete with other institutions in Nigeria and around the world.
Meanwhile, Ogunsanya urged the Lagos State government to merge Lagos State College of Health Technology, School of Nursing, and Lagos State Teaching Hospital to establish Lagos State University of Medical Science.
He also urge Governor Sanwo-Olu to make LASPOTECH, MOCPED and AOCOED a degree awarding institutions.
The NANS chairman expressed readiness to continue to provide peaceful environment for Sanwo-Olu led-administration to strive.
He further said, “We are grateful to the management of all institutions in Lagos for allowing Students Unionism to thrive, particularly the management of Yabatech for resurrecting the Students Union, and we appeal to the management of the University of Lagos to think in this direction.
“We extend our greetings to all Heads of Institutions, Government officials, Political Elites, and other well-meaning Lagosians for the growth and development of the association.
“We also use this medium to raise awareness about the security challenges that institutions face.
“After careful consideration of the performance, Mr Governor, we are ready to continue constructing a peaceful environment in which your administration can operate.”
