NAF Doubles Troop Allowance Amid Soaring Inflation — Spends ₦61bn on Infrastructure
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced a 100 percent increase in the Ration Cash Allowance for its personnel, as well as significant enhancements to its welfare and insurance packages. These measures were unveiled by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, during the commissioning of new accommodation at the Sam Ethnan Air Force Base in Lagos on Monday.
Air Marshal Abubakar stated that the allowance increment has been captured in the 2025 budget as a proactive measure to cushion the impact of rising living costs on personnel. He also disclosed that the NAF has introduced a new Group Personal Accident Insurance Policy, which offers improved compensation for bodily injuries, permanent or temporary disabilities, death, medical expenses, and salary reimbursement during hospitalization. So far, 23 beneficiaries—including nine recent ones—have received substantial payouts under the scheme.
To further support its personnel, the NAF has initiated a large-scale distribution of new uniforms and accoutrements, with a target of achieving 100 percent coverage within two weeks. Additionally, there has been an upward review of the monthly electricity subsidy at the Sam Ethnan base.
The Chief of Air Staff reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of NAF personnel, noting that the service is in talks with the Defence Headquarters to review the Armed Forces Manual of Financial Administration to enhance overall welfare packages.
Beyond financial and material support, Air Marshal Abubakar highlighted ongoing investments in infrastructure. According to him, the NAF is executing over 470 projects nationwide—including residential buildings, operational facilities, medical centres, sporting complexes, and places of worship. Of these, 295 projects, or 63 percent, have been completed, with 175 currently in progress. He added that over ₦61 billion has so far been invested in these projects, which also cover upgrades to roads, water systems, and electricity infrastructure across NAF bases.
