Lokpobiri Name Controversy: Group Seeks Clarity Over Susan Waibode’s Public Identity

Lokpobiri Name Controversy: Group Seeks Clarity Over Susan Waibode’s Public Identity
By Akin Alade
A fresh controversy over the use of the Lokpobiri name by Susan Waibode has triggered calls for greater clarity concerning public identification, representation and the distinction between private activities and official government endorsement.
The debate followed a statement by Nigerians for Good Governance (NGG), which questioned promotional materials reportedly identifying Waibode as “Hon. Mrs. Susan Waibode Heineken Lokpobiri” and presenting her as the wife of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri.
Rather than focusing solely on the personal relationship between the two individuals, the emerging issue raises a broader question about how the names and positions of serving public officials are presented in connection with private, charitable or political activities.
NGG, through its chairman, Emmanuel Thomas, called for clarification over what it described as possible confusion surrounding Waibode’s use of the Lokpobiri name and any perceived association with the minister.
The group particularly cautioned members of the public and political associates against assuming that activities linked to Waibode or organisations associated with her automatically carry the endorsement or authorisation of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources or the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources.
That concern is significant because public office carries institutional weight, and the use of a serving official’s name in promotional materials can potentially create different interpretations about whether an activity is personal, charitable, political or officially backed.
However, the controversy requires caution. The Guardian reported that it could not independently verify NGG’s claim concerning the current status of the marriage between Waibode and Lokpobiri. The report also noted that recent public reports had continued to identify Waibode as Lokpobiri’s wife.
This means that the central issue should not be treated as an established marital dispute, but rather as a call for clarification about identity, representation and the extent of any official association.
Public records also show that Waibode has for years been involved in charitable and empowerment activities. An earlier Guardian profile described her work through the Reach Women and Children Foundation, including initiatives targeted at vulnerable people, women and children.
Her history of community and charitable engagement therefore predates the current controversy, making it important to distinguish her personal philanthropic activities from any claim of official representation of the Federal Government.
NGG specifically referenced the Reaching Every Adult and Child Foundation and urged members of the public to independently verify claims of official endorsement or representation before entering into transactions or engagements based on such assumptions.
The controversy also highlights a wider challenge in Nigeria’s public space, where the names of politicians, ministers and other public officials can carry considerable influence. Clear identification of private initiatives can help prevent members of the public from confusing personal activities with government programmes.
For government officials, the issue reinforces the importance of maintaining clear boundaries between public office and private relationships or associations. For members of the public, it equally underscores the need to verify claims of official backing before relying on them.
Importantly, the allegations made by NGG should not be interpreted as proof that Waibode falsely represented herself or that any organisation associated with her acted without authorisation. The Guardian reported that it had not established whether the promotional materials were produced or authorised by Waibode herself.
The minister and Waibode were reportedly contacted for their responses, and their positions would be important in resolving questions raised by the controversy.
At the heart of the matter is therefore a simple but important principle: public trust depends on clarity. Where the name of a serving public official appears alongside private, political or charitable activities, clear information about the nature of the relationship can prevent unnecessary speculation and misunderstanding.
As the issue develops, clarification from the parties concerned could help settle the questions being raised and ensure that private initiatives are not inadvertently confused with official government activities or endorsements.
