The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially received a petition calling for the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate.
The petition, dated March 21, 2025, was submitted to INEC’s headquarters in Abuja and was acknowledged on March 24, 2025. The petitioners, who identify as registered voters from Kogi Central, have expressed a loss of confidence in Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, accusing her of gross misconduct, abuse of office, evasion of due process, and deceitful conduct, which they claim has undermined the integrity of both the Nigerian Senate and democratic institutions.
Citing Section 69 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) and INEC’s recall guidelines, the petitioners assert that more than half of the registered voters in Kogi Central have signed the recall request. They are demanding that INEC immediately commence the constitutional process for her removal and declare her Senate seat vacant.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was elected as the winner of the February 25, 2023, Kogi Central Senatorial election after the Court of Appeal ruling on October 31, 2023, upheld her victory as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate.
As of now, INEC has not issued a statement on the petition or outlined its next steps. Should the petition be validated, it could trigger a fresh election in Kogi Central.
