Guinea Seeks Review of Morocco’s 1976 AFCON Win, Title at Risk

The Guinean Football Federation is urging CAF to apply consistent disciplinary measures across competitions, referencing recent decisions that have seen titles reviewed or reassigned under controversial circumstances. Guinea argues that similar standards should be extended to historical tournaments.
At the centre of the dispute is the final round of the 1976 tournament, which was decided via a round-robin format rather than a single final match. Guinea needed a win in their decisive encounter against Morocco to claim the title and had taken the lead before Morocco equalised late in the game.
Guinea further claims that Morocco temporarily walked off the pitch during the match, an incident they believe should have attracted sanctions under current football regulations. However, play resumed and the match ended in a draw, a result that secured the championship for Morocco.
The renewed demand has sparked fresh debate over fairness and consistency in CAF’s rulings, particularly regarding how past incidents are judged against modern disciplinary standards.
