Governors Set Up Security Subcommittee as Insecurity Spirals: A Bold Step Towards Action

Amid the escalating security crisis in Nigeria, the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) has taken a decisive step to address the growing wave of violence, kidnappings, and banditry plaguing the nation. During an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) session held on Wednesday, the governors directed security agencies to confront the threats head-on and formed a subcommittee tasked with working directly with heads of security agencies to implement coordinated strategies.

The meeting, which had in attendance top security officials including the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, delved into discussions about strengthening national and subnational security frameworks. General Musa briefed the governors on an innovative security initiative aimed at enhancing threat detection and improving crisis management through advanced technology.

Governors expressed strong support for the initiative, recognizing the importance of tech-driven solutions in addressing the evolving security challenges at the state level. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, who chairs the NGF, emphasized the urgency of safeguarding lives and property, noting that the new security approach would significantly enhance the collective capacity of state and national authorities to combat insecurity.

Furthermore, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State called for the creation of a state police force, asserting that local policing is crucial for effective security management in a country as diverse as Nigeria. He stressed that, while federal agencies play a critical role, state-level enforcement is needed to address the unique challenges each state faces.

The NGF’s commitment to tackling insecurity extends to its collaboration with other sectors, as discussed during the meeting. Minister of Housing, Ahmed Dangiwa, briefed the forum on the National Land Registration and Titling Programme, which is intended to strengthen property rights and encourage economic growth, highlighting the importance of collaboration between federal and state governments.

With security at the forefront of national discourse, the governors have vowed to work closely with all relevant agencies to implement these measures effectively, reaffirming their dedication to protecting the lives and welfare of Nigerians.
