Germany Confirms Visa-Free Entry for Citizens of 62 Countries
Germany has reaffirmed that citizens of 62 countries can enter the country without obtaining a visa for short-term visits, provided they meet the conditions of the Schengen travel rules.
The visa-free policy allows eligible travellers to visit Germany for tourism, business meetings, family visits, cultural events and other short-term purposes for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. However, visitors are not permitted to take up employment or reside permanently under the visa waiver scheme.
The visa exemption applies to nationals of countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Israel, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, the United Arab Emirates, Taiwan and several Caribbean and Pacific nations. Citizens of all European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) member states and Switzerland also enjoy unrestricted entry and freedom of movement into Germany.
German authorities explained that travellers benefiting from the visa waiver must still present valid travel documents and may be asked to provide proof of accommodation, sufficient financial means, return or onward travel tickets, and evidence of the purpose of their visit when arriving at the border.
Citizens of countries not covered by the visa exemption policy are required to obtain a Schengen visa before travelling to Germany. The visa application process generally requires applicants to submit supporting documents, including proof of accommodation, travel insurance, financial capacity and a travel itinerary.
Germany also noted that the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is expected to become an additional requirement for visa-exempt travellers entering the Schengen Area once it is fully implemented later in 2026. The system will require eligible visitors to obtain online travel authorisation before departure.
