Galatasaray Offer Osimhen Captaincy and No. 9 Shirt in Bid to Block Transfer Exit
Turkish champions Galatasaray have launched a major bid to retain Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen by offering him the club’s prestigious No. 9 jersey and a potential captaincy role ahead of the 2026/27 season. The move is part of a broader strategy to convince the Super Eagles star to remain in Istanbul despite growing interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Osimhen has worn the No. 45 shirt since joining Galatasaray, while the famous No. 9 jersey has been occupied by Argentine forward Mauro Icardi. However, with Icardi expected to leave the club this summer, the Turkish giants are preparing to hand the iconic number to the Nigerian forward as a symbol of his importance to the team’s future.
Beyond the jersey switch, Galatasaray are also considering making Osimhen the club captain. Reports from Turkey indicate that club officials and coaching staff view the Nigerian international as one of the most influential figures in the dressing room and a natural leader capable of guiding the team into a new era.
The 27-year-old striker has attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid. Despite the attention, Galatasaray remain determined to keep their prized asset and have reportedly placed a valuation of between €130 million and €150 million on the prolific forward.
Osimhen has enjoyed remarkable success since joining the Turkish side. His goals have played a key role in Galatasaray’s domestic dominance, helping the club secure consecutive league titles while also making a strong impact in the UEFA Champions League. The Nigerian striker has established himself as one of the most productive forwards in Europe and recently became one of the fastest players in Galatasaray’s history to reach the 50-goal mark.
Galatasaray recently completed the full €75 million transfer payment to Napoli, strengthening their position as they seek to fend off interest from rival clubs. Club executives believe offering Osimhen greater leadership responsibilities and symbolic recognition could persuade him to commit his long-term future to the Turkish champions.
As the summer transfer window approaches, all eyes will remain on Osimhen’s next move, with Galatasaray hoping that the promise of leadership, legacy, and continued success will outweigh lucrative offers from Europe’s football elite.
