Ex-Lagos Governorship Candidate Funso Doherty Quits PDP Amid Prolonged Party Crisis
Former Lagos State governorship candidate, Funso Doherty, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, citing persistent internal crises. Doherty, who joined the party in 2024, announced his resignation via a letter shared on his social media handle.
He explained that a recent court ruling nullifying the party’s 2025 convention, which handed leadership control to a faction aligned with figures supporting the ruling All Progressives Congress, was a key factor in his decision. Doherty criticised the development, describing it as backing an administration that has worsened poverty, insecurity, and the cost of living in the country.
Doherty further stressed the importance of a united opposition, noting that Nigeria’s democracy is fragile and at risk of fragmentation. He stated that his departure from the PDP is driven by a commitment to fostering opposition unity, particularly in Lagos State, and to ensuring that citizens’ welfare and constitutional accountability are prioritised.
