Edo Ex-Deputy Governor Shaibu Declares PDP Weakening Ahead of 2027 Elections
Former Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has stated that he had long realized that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was gradually losing strength and political relevance before his eventual exit from the opposition party.
Shaibu made the remarks while speaking on the internal crisis rocking the PDP, insisting that persistent divisions, leadership conflicts, and unresolved disputes within the party have continued to weaken its structure across the country.
According to the former deputy governor, the PDP has struggled to maintain unity in recent years, especially after the outcome of the 2023 general elections and the series of disagreements involving influential party stakeholders.
Shaibu argued that many party members became frustrated over what he described as poor internal management, lack of clear direction, and continuous power struggles among leaders.
The former deputy governor, who recently aligned politically with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said his decision was driven by his belief that the PDP was gradually losing the capacity to effectively compete at the national level.
He further claimed that several prominent politicians and loyal party members had quietly lost confidence in the PDP due to unresolved crises affecting the party’s leadership structure and electoral strategies.
Shaibu’s comments come amid ongoing tensions within the opposition party, with different factions continuing to battle over control, restructuring, and preparations ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political observers believe the latest remarks may further intensify political debates in Edo State and beyond, especially as parties continue repositioning ahead of future electoral contests.
The PDP has faced several internal challenges in recent years, including leadership disputes, defections, zoning disagreements, and legal battles involving party executives and stakeholders.
Despite the criticisms, PDP leaders have repeatedly maintained that the party remains strong and capable of reclaiming power at the national level in future elections.
Analysts say the political realignments currently taking place across Nigeria may significantly influence the shape of the opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
