The Federal Government has dismissed 15 officials of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) and demoted 59 others for misconduct and indiscipline, signaling a renewed push to restore integrity within the service.
The disciplinary measures were disclosed in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the NCoS, Umar Abubakar, following a review of 224 cases by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), under the Ministry of Interior. The decisions were based on recommendations from the Board’s Disciplinary and General Purpose Committee (BDGPC) after thorough investigations.
In addition to the dismissals and demotions, 42 officers were issued warning letters, while 16 personnel were cleared of all allegations. Seven staff members remain suspended pending the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
In one notable case, an officer was suspended and recommended for prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) due to the severity of the alleged offence. Furthermore, eight personnel were compulsorily retired, and another officer had his rank reversed with instructions to refund all financial benefits received while holding the position.
According to Abubakar, the actions reflect the government’s commitment to enforcing discipline and upholding professional standards. He noted that the Board, under the leadership of Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunde Ojo, is determined to instill ethical conduct across all levels of the service.
Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwacuhe, assured that disciplinary processes will continue to be carried out fairly and in full compliance with existing regulations, while urging public support for ongoing reforms.
