Ex-Acting AGF Nwabuoku Jailed 72 Years Over N868.4m Fraud
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has convicted and sentenced former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, to a total of 72 years in prison over a fraud involving N868.46 million.
Nwabuoku was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges bordering on money laundering and financial misconduct. The anti-graft agency accused him of illegally diverting public funds during his time in office.
Following the trial, the court found him guilty on multiple counts and handed down cumulative sentences amounting to 72 years imprisonment. The judgment marks one of the most significant convictions involving a former top government financial official in recent times.
The EFCC had maintained that the prosecution was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability and curb corruption within Nigeria’s public sector. The commission presented evidence showing how the funds were allegedly laundered through various channels.
The conviction is being seen as a strong signal in the fight against corruption, particularly within key government institutions.
