Attack our staff and face severe punishment, FMC threatens patients’

The management of Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, has warned relatives of patients to desist from attacking its personnels or will be faced with heavy consequences.
The management reacting to recent cases of attack by patients’ relatives on medical personnels emphasised that drastic action will be taken on any one found culpable .
The acting Medical Director, Dr. Fidelis Ojeblenu during a press conference held at the centre on Tuesday frowned at the continuous attack on FMC medical personnels and destruction of hospital properties by members of the public.
Ojeblenu warned that the management under his watch will not tolerate the threats and breaches of safety and security of lives and properties of the healthcare team.
It would be recalled that there was a physical attack by a patient’s relatives on one of the medical personnels at the centre on July 6.
The relatives who were infuriated by news of the death of the patient, threw caution into the winds and went straight for the patient’s Doctor and assaulted and inflicted serious injuries on him before he was rescued by his colleagues.
This however made Doctors and Nurses at Centre to announce the suspension of night duties to protest the alleged incessant physical assault on their colleagues by relatives of some patients.
A notice to that effect was served the Management by the hospital’s branches of Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) and National Association of Nurses and Midwives(NANNM) on Wednesday 7th July 2021 and the action was to last initial three days.
Corroborating the unions, the acting MD at the press conference stressed that the centre would do everything possible to ensure that culprits are made to face the consequences of their actions.
“We have overhaul the security architecture of the hospital in readiness to forestall future occurrences. Plain clothed security agents are on ground to apprehend future culprits
“We also use this opportunity to further express our heartfelt concerns and love to the healthcare workers, the nurses and doctors who are the victims of the recent incidents, and indeed all the healthcare team who are wounded and pained. We stand by you in your efforts at rendering essential life-saving services to humanity”, he added
The acting Medical Director therefore call on the traditional rulers and leaders to join hands in curtailing these dastard acts.
He noted that the centre is committed to caring for the health of the community through efficient services.
He also added that complaint about perceived ill-treatment from medical workers should be channeled to the right lawful avenues, instead of patients and their relatives taking laws into their hands.
“There are lawful avenues for resolution of perceived ill-treatment or complaints by patients and their relatives, without taking laws into their hands” he stressed.
