Police Pension Crisis: Atiku Slams Tinubu, Demands ReformsAtiku

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has intensified his criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the worsening plight of retired police officers in Nigeria, describing their continued struggle for improved pension benefits as a national embarrassment that demands urgent government intervention.

Atiku’s latest criticism comes amid renewed protests by retired personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, who have repeatedly demanded a review of their pension arrangements and improved retirement benefits after decades of service to the country.

The former Vice President expressed concern that individuals who dedicated their productive years to protecting lives, property and national institutions were being compelled to embark on public demonstrations before their welfare concerns could receive government attention.

In a statement issued by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, Atiku accused the Tinubu administration of failing to demonstrate sufficient commitment to the welfare of retired security personnel.

He argued that the treatment of former police officers reflected a troubling contradiction in Nigeria’s security administration, where personnel entrusted with protecting political leaders and ordinary citizens allegedly face financial hardship after leaving active service.

According to Atiku, a responsible government must recognise that national security extends beyond the procurement of equipment, recruitment of personnel and deployment of officers to troubled communities.

He maintained that guaranteeing the financial security and dignity of retired law enforcement officers should form an essential component of any meaningful security reform.

The ADC presidential candidate questioned why retired police officers should repeatedly gather at the National Pension Commission (PenCom) to demand improvements to benefits they believe they deserve after years of public service.

He warned that the development could weaken confidence among serving police personnel, particularly those approaching retirement.

Atiku also expressed disappointment over the unresolved controversy surrounding the Police Exit Bill, which seeks to remove the Nigeria Police Force from the existing Contributory Pension Scheme.

According to him, the legislation has been awaiting presidential action since March 2026, leaving affected officers uncertain about the future of their retirement benefits.

He called for urgent clarification of the bill’s status and appropriate legislative and executive action to address the concerns of police retirees.

The former Vice President argued that the prolonged disagreement over police pensions had become more than an administrative issue, describing it as a question of justice, institutional responsibility and respect for national service.

He further criticised what he characterised as a system that relies heavily on police officers during their active careers but allegedly fails to provide adequate financial protection when they retire.

Atiku disclosed that he had directed members of his campaign team to engage directly with protesting retired officers to obtain firsthand information about their grievances and expectations.

He said such engagement would help deepen understanding of the challenges facing former police personnel and contribute to the development of practical policy solutions.

As part of his proposed reforms, Atiku unveiled plans to strengthen retirement protection through his Police Dignity Guarantee Plan, which he said would prioritise improved pension payments, restoration of gratuities and greater financial security for serving and retired officers.

The proposal also includes action on the Police Exit Bill and implementation of the Police Pension Board Bill, which he pledged to pursue within 30 days of assuming office if elected president in 2027.

Atiku maintained that the welfare of police officers must become a central consideration in Nigeria’s broader security strategy, stressing that personnel who risk their lives defending the country deserve dependable support after retirement.

The pension controversy has continued to generate public debate, particularly over the adequacy of retirement benefits under the Contributory Pension Scheme and the financial implications of creating a separate arrangement for police personnel.

Retired officers have consistently argued that their existing pension benefits are insufficient to meet basic living expenses, especially amid rising costs of food, healthcare, transportation and accommodation.

Their agitation has also raised wider questions about retirement security across Nigeria’s public service and the responsibility of government to protect workers from financial hardship in old age.

Beyond the political exchanges between Atiku and the Tinubu administration, the controversy highlights the need for sustainable pension reforms capable of balancing retirees’ welfare with long-term funding obligations.

Resolving the dispute will require cooperation among the Presidency, National Assembly, PenCom, police authorities and representatives of retired officers.

For many affected retirees, however, the immediate concern remains access to adequate benefits that can guarantee a reasonable standard of living after years of service.

With the 2027 general elections approaching, the welfare of retired police officers is emerging as another issue in the growing political debate over governance, economic hardship and social protection under the Tinubu administration.

Atiku’s intervention has consequently placed renewed attention on the Federal Government’s handling of police pension reforms and the unresolved demands of former security personnel.

The central question remains whether the government can deliver a lasting solution that restores confidence in Nigeria’s police retirement system while ensuring that those who served the nation are treated with dignity.

For retired police officers awaiting meaningful reforms, the expectation is that the continuing debate will translate into concrete policies, legislative action and improved retirement benefits rather than another round of political promises.
