Imo West 2027: Okorocha Defeats Uzodimma in Court, Hails Tinubu

Former Imo State Governor, Senator Rochas Okorocha, has described his victory at the Federal High Court in Abuja as a major breakthrough for political justice in Imo State, declaring that the judgment has opened a new chapter in the state’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Okorocha, who defeated Governor Hope Uzodimma in the legal battle over the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial ticket for Imo West, also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, suggesting that the court’s decision symbolised the liberation of Imo politics from what he described as longstanding political restrictions.

The former governor made the remarks on Thursday, October 29, 2026, while receiving members of his legal team following the judgment delivered by Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

In its ruling, the court declared Okorocha the legitimate winner of the APC senatorial primary conducted on May 18, 2026, and directed the party to forward his name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as its candidate for the January 16, 2027, senatorial election.

The court equally restrained Governor Uzodimma from presenting himself as the APC candidate for Imo West, effectively overturning his earlier recognition by the electoral commission.

Reacting to the development, Okorocha described the judgment as a victory beyond his personal political ambition, insisting that it represented an important moment for democracy, justice and the political future of Imo State.

He particularly commended the judiciary for examining the evidence presented during the proceedings and delivering a decision that, in his assessment, upheld the principles of fairness and electoral accountability.

In a symbolic reference to President Tinubu’s familiar traditional cap, Okorocha suggested that the court’s decision had broken what he regarded as the political shackles restricting Imo State.

He further interpreted the judgment as an indication that the President would not support political injustice within the ruling party.

However, Okorocha’s interpretation remains his personal political assessment, as no evidence has been established that President Tinubu intervened in the dispute or influenced the judicial outcome.

The judgment has introduced a fresh dimension to the political rivalry between Okorocha and Uzodimma, two influential figures whose competing interests have shaped political developments in Imo State for several years.

The controversy originated from conflicting claims surrounding the APC senatorial primary, with INEC previously recognising Uzodimma as the winner after reporting that he secured 230,464 votes against Okorocha’s 1,098 votes.

Okorocha subsequently challenged the nomination in court, maintaining that the result did not reflect the lawful outcome of the primary election.

During the dispute, questions were raised over conflicting documents, the method adopted for selecting the candidate and the authenticity of records presented in support of the nomination.

The former governor also questioned claims that Uzodimma emerged through a consensus arrangement despite the existence of documents containing individual vote figures.

Justice Egwuatu, after considering the evidence before the court, ruled that Okorocha had established his claim to the party’s senatorial ticket and ordered INEC to recognise him accordingly.

Political observers believe the development could significantly alter calculations within the Imo State chapter of the APC, particularly as political actors position themselves for the 2027 elections.

Beyond the immediate contest for Imo West, the judgment has renewed discussions about internal democracy, transparent party primaries and the role of the judiciary in resolving disputes arising from political nominations.

Okorocha, who governed Imo State between 2011 and 2019 and subsequently represented Imo West in the Senate from 2019 to 2023, is seeking a return to the National Assembly.

Uzodimma, on the other hand, remains the incumbent governor and an influential figure within the APC’s national political structure.

Although the Federal High Court judgment represents a major victory for Okorocha, the legal contest may not have reached its conclusion, as the affected parties retain the right to challenge the decision through the appellate courts.

For now, the ruling has strengthened Okorocha’s political position and intensified attention on the internal power struggle within the ruling party in Imo State.

As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, the outcome of the dispute could become an important test of the APC’s ability to manage competing political interests while maintaining confidence in its internal democratic processes.
