2027: NDC Faces Readiness Test as Obi, Kwankwaso Campaign Council and Manifesto Await Release
By Akin Alade
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is facing an important test of its preparedness for the 2027 general election as Nigerians await the inauguration of its Presidential Campaign Council and the release of its policy manifesto.
The party has attributed the delay to ongoing vetting and due diligence, insisting that it wants to assemble a campaign team capable of demonstrating competence, unity and credibility. However, the absence of a definite timetable for the two major activities raises questions about when the party will fully present its organisational structure and policy direction to the electorate.
The NDC’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said the party was taking a deliberate approach to selecting members of its Presidential Campaign Council. According to him, the objective is to ensure that those appointed have the capacity and credibility to contribute meaningfully to the campaign of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Obi, Kwankwaso to Determine Campaign Council Date
Director disclosed that the responsibility for announcing the inauguration date had been left to Obi and Kwankwaso, giving the presidential ticket a central role in determining when the campaign council would formally commence operations.
The arrangement places significant responsibility on the two candidates to help shape a campaign structure that reflects their political priorities while maintaining cohesion with the party leadership. The council is expected to coordinate mobilisation, media engagements, stakeholder relations and other activities necessary for a nationwide presidential campaign.
Nevertheless, the party has not announced a specific date for the inauguration or confirmed when the manifesto will be unveiled. The timing of these announcements will be important in determining how quickly the NDC can move from internal preparations to a more visible presentation of its electoral programme.
Manifesto Becomes Key Test of Opposition Credibility
Beyond the composition of its campaign council, the NDC’s manifesto will be a major opportunity to explain how it intends to address the concerns of Nigerian voters.
With economic pressures, unemployment, food affordability, insecurity and public confidence in governance among issues of national concern, voters will expect the party to move beyond political slogans and outline practical policy proposals.
A credible manifesto should explain the party’s priorities, how its proposed policies would be implemented, the resources required and how progress would be measured. Such details could help Nigerians assess whether the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket offers a workable alternative to the policies of the incumbent administration.
The party’s decision to complete its internal processes before unveiling its policy document may be intended to ensure consistency between its campaign leadership and its proposed programme. However, a clear timetable would also help supporters, party members and prospective voters understand what to expect.
Internal Coordination Remains Important
The development comes against the background of earlier controversy surrounding a 59-member campaign council announced by the Obi-Kwankwaso (OK) Movement, which the NDC subsequently disowned as an unauthorised structure.
The disagreement highlighted the importance of coordinating support groups with the party’s official campaign machinery. The NDC has since maintained that the presidential campaign structure should be developed through recognised party channels, with Obi and Kwankwaso participating in the selection of key officials.
For a party seeking to expand its national reach, managing relationships between its leadership, candidates and grassroots supporters will be essential. A coordinated structure could help prevent conflicting announcements, clarify responsibilities and ensure that campaign resources are directed towards common objectives.
2027 Contest Will Demand More Than Political Popularity
As preparations continue, the NDC will need to demonstrate that its political appeal can be supported by an effective organisational structure and a clearly articulated policy agenda.
The eventual inauguration of the campaign council will provide an opportunity to establish leadership responsibilities, while the manifesto will allow the party to communicate its proposed solutions to the country’s challenges.
For Obi and Kwankwaso, the next phase will involve translating their political ambitions into a coherent campaign that can reach voters across the six geopolitical zones. The party’s ability to resolve outstanding organisational questions and communicate its plans clearly may influence how the electorate assesses its readiness for the 2027 presidential race.
Ultimately, the NDC’s challenge is not simply to assemble a campaign team or publish a manifesto, but to convince Nigerians that it has the leadership, policy direction and organisational capacity to compete effectively for power. The coming announcements will provide a clearer indication of how prepared the party is for that task.
