Osimhen Returns: Galatasaray Race to Get Nigerian Star Fit for Barcelona Clash

Galatasaray are stepping up efforts to have Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen available for their crucial UEFA Champions League encounter with Barcelona next Tuesday, October 13, as the Turkish champions carefully manage the forward’s return from injury.
Osimhen has been sidelined since September 4 after suffering an adductor injury during Galatasaray’s 3-2 victory over Istanbul Basaksehir. The injury forced him to miss the club’s Champions League opener against Sporting CP as well as Nigeria’s recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures.
The 27-year-old has now returned to partial team training, raising hopes that he could make his comeback against Barcelona at Rams Park. However, Galatasaray’s medical team remains cautious and is determined not to rush the Super Eagles striker back into action.
Galatasaray club doctor Yener Ince has described Osimhen’s injury as one that could not be underestimated, revealing that the Nigerian suffered significant bleeding in the affected muscle group. The medical team has therefore opted for a carefully controlled rehabilitation process before clearing him for full competitive action.
The timing of Osimhen’s recovery could hardly be more important for Galatasaray. The Turkish champions opened their Champions League campaign with a 3-1 defeat away to Sporting CP, leaving them with little room for another setback when Barcelona arrive in Istanbul.
That has increased the pressure on manager Okan Buruk, who will be keen to have his most dangerous attacking weapon available for the European encounter. Osimhen had made an impressive start to the domestic campaign before his injury, scoring six goals and providing two assists in his first four league appearances.
The club could, however, use Friday’s Turkish Super Lig meeting with Kasımpaşa as a possible stepping stone for Osimhen’s return, depending on the results of his fitness assessments. Reports suggest Galatasaray may carefully introduce him before the much bigger Champions League test against Barcelona.
For Osimhen, a return against Barcelona would provide an opportunity to immediately remind Europe of his quality after a frustrating spell on the sidelines. The Nigerian striker has already experienced the intensity of facing the Catalan giants during his time at Napoli and would be one of Galatasaray’s major attacking threats if declared fit.
The Champions League fixture is scheduled for October 13 in Istanbul, with Galatasaray hosting Barcelona in the second round of the league phase. UEFA’s fixture list confirms the encounter, while Galatasaray’s official schedule also lists the match for that date.
Galatasaray’s priority, however, will be balancing their need for Osimhen against the danger of aggravating the injury. The club’s medical team has already stressed that protecting the player from a setback is more important than rushing him into action simply because of the importance of the Barcelona fixture.
For Nigerian football fans, Osimhen’s possible return is another reason to watch the Champions League clash closely. His fitness, minutes and performance against Barcelona could also provide an important indication of how quickly he is returning to his best after the injury setback.
With Barcelona coming to Istanbul and Galatasaray desperate to recover from their opening-day defeat, the spotlight is now firmly on Osimhen. Whether he starts, comes off the bench or is kept out completely will depend on his final medical assessment — but his return to training has already given the Turkish giants a major boost.
