Former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd.), has again opened another revealing chapter on Nigeria’s turbulent military history, declaring that no successful coup in the country was carried out without the involvement and support of civilians.
Babangida, one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s military and political history, made the disclosure during an interview on Badeggi 90.1 FM in Niger State as part of activities marking his 85th birthday.
His latest revelation is significant because Babangida was not merely an observer of Nigeria’s era of military interventions. He was a central participant in the country’s military politics and became Head of State following the August 1985 coup that removed Major-General Muhammadu Buhari.
Speaking from decades of experience at the centre of military power, Babangida maintained that civilians played important roles behind successful military takeovers in Nigeria.
According to the former military ruler, wealthy civilians were sometimes involved in supporting and financing military interventions, challenging the popular perception that coups were exclusively conceived and executed within the barracks.
His comments could reopen debate about the largely undocumented civilian networks that allegedly operated behind some of Nigeria’s past military interventions.
For decades, public accounts of military coups have concentrated predominantly on soldiers who planned, announced or executed them. Babangida’s latest disclosure introduces another dimension: the possibility that influential civilians, including wealthy individuals, may have provided resources or other forms of backing to military conspirators.
However, Babangida did not publicly identify the civilians he said participated in or supported the successful coups, meaning his broad assertion does not establish the involvement of any particular civilian without further evidence.
The former military president also revisited one of the most controversial and painful episodes of his administration — the 1985 alleged coup plot involving his childhood friend and former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Major-General Mamman Vatsa.
Babangida recalled that Vatsa initially denied involvement when confronted over allegations that he was part of a plot to overthrow the government.
He said he initially found the allegation difficult to believe because of the long-standing relationship between them. Babangida and Vatsa had grown up together, attended school together and later joined the Nigerian military.
According to Babangida, he summoned Vatsa and General Mohammed Gado Nasko after receiving information linking them to the alleged plot. Both men denied involvement, prompting the establishment of a military commission of inquiry.
Babangida said the investigation subsequently cleared Nasko but found evidence linking Vatsa to the alleged coup plot.
The former military ruler described the development as devastating, maintaining that despite his personal relationship with Vatsa, he could not prevent the consequences imposed under the military system at the time.
Vatsa was subsequently executed by firing squad in March 1986.
Decades later, the episode remains one of the most controversial aspects of the Babangida years, particularly because of the friendship between the two military officers and continuing historical debate surrounding the alleged plot.
Babangida also returned to another defining controversy of his administration — the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election widely associated with Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.
He described Abiola as a close friend and generous Nigerian whose philanthropy crossed ethnic, religious and regional boundaries.
On the annulment, Babangida again maintained that it was one of the most difficult decisions of his military career but said it was a collective decision taken by the government based on what officials at the time considered the national interest.
The annulment remains one of the most consequential political decisions in modern Nigerian history and ultimately contributed to the crisis that ended Babangida’s eight-year rule in August 1993.
His latest comments add to disclosures he has made in recent years about events that occurred during his time in power, providing historians and Nigerians with further material for examining a period when military coups repeatedly changed the country’s leadership.
Babangida also addressed contemporary Nigeria, urging citizens to remain hopeful despite current economic and security challenges and to continue supporting the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He expressed optimism that the government’s ongoing efforts would eventually produce positive results for the country.
Coming from a former military ruler who witnessed and participated in Nigeria’s era of coups, Babangida’s assertion about civilian involvement carries particular historical weight.
But it also leaves an unanswered question.
If wealthy and influential civilians were indispensable to successful military coups, as Babangida now maintains, who were they, what roles did they play and how much did civilian interests shape Nigeria’s years of military intervention?
