LPPC Suspends Mike Ozekhome’s SAN Status Pending Disciplinary Proceedings
The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has suspended prominent constitutional lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, from using the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings against him.
The decision was reached during the committee’s 173rd General Meeting held on June 23, 2026, and announced in a statement signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the LPPC, Kabir Akanbi.
According to the LPPC, the suspension was approved in line with Paragraph 26(6) of the Guidelines for the Conferment of the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria. The committee explained that the measure would remain in force until the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings before its Disciplinary and Ethics Sub-Committee, as well as other related matters.
The committee stated that the temporary suspension is intended to preserve the integrity, dignity and prestige of the SAN rank while the allegations against Ozekhome are being reviewed. It consequently directed the senior lawyer to refrain from presenting or parading himself as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria until the disciplinary process is concluded.
Although the LPPC did not disclose the specific allegations in its statement, the suspension comes amid ongoing legal and disciplinary issues linked to a disputed London property case in which Ozekhome has denied any wrongdoing.
The committee reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of ethics, professionalism and discipline within Nigeria’s legal profession, stressing that the SAN rank must continue to command public confidence and respect.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria designation is the highest professional honour bestowed on legal practitioners in the country and is awarded to lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional distinction in advocacy, legal scholarship and contributions to the development of the law.
