Ex-Ondo Deputy Speaker Sues IGP Over Alleged Arrest Ahead of APC Primary Election

A former Deputy Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly has filed a lawsuit against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), alleging unlawful arrest and violation of his fundamental rights just hours before the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election in the state.
The ex-lawmaker claimed that his arrest occurred at a critical period ahead of the party’s primary exercise, a development he believes was politically motivated and aimed at preventing him from participating fully in the electoral process. He is seeking judicial intervention, including damages and a declaration that his arrest and detention were unconstitutional.
According to court documents, the former Deputy Speaker argued that security agencies acted outside the provisions of the law by detaining him without sufficient justification. He maintained that the action infringed on his constitutional rights to personal liberty, freedom of movement, and political participation.
The suit names the Inspector-General of Police and other relevant security authorities as respondents. The claimant is asking the court to hold the police accountable for what he described as an abuse of power and misuse of security institutions during a sensitive political exercise.
The legal action has generated fresh debate over the role of security agencies in Nigeria’s political process, particularly during party primaries and elections. Political observers say the outcome of the case could have wider implications for the conduct of future intra-party contests and the protection of aspirants’ rights.
The lawsuit comes amid heightened political activities in Ondo State as stakeholders continue to position themselves ahead of future elections. While the police authorities are yet to publicly respond to the allegations, the court is expected to determine whether the arrest was lawful and whether the claimant’s rights were violated.
Analysts believe the case may further spotlight concerns over the intersection of politics and law enforcement, especially during periods of intense political competition.
