Ambassador Shehu Barde Assumes Office as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana
Nigeria has taken a significant step toward strengthening its diplomatic engagement with Ghana following the formal assumption of office by Ambassador Shehu Ilu Barde as the country’s new High Commissioner to the West African nation.
Ambassador Barde officially resumed duties at the Nigerian High Commission in Accra, where he received a warm welcome from mission staff, defence officials, trade representatives, and members of the Nigerian community residing in Ghana. His arrival has been described as the beginning of a renewed phase in the long-standing diplomatic relationship between both countries.
Speaking during the reception, members of the Nigerian mission expressed optimism that Barde’s extensive diplomatic experience would further enhance cooperation between Nigeria and Ghana in areas of trade, regional security, economic development, and people-to-people relations.
The new High Commissioner brings more than three decades of experience in Nigeria’s public and foreign service. Born in Katsina State, he earned a degree in Sociology from Bayero University, Kano, before undergoing professional diplomatic training at the Nigerian Foreign Service Academy.
Since joining the Nigerian Foreign Service in 1995, Barde has served in several strategic diplomatic postings, including Nigeria’s missions in Burkina Faso, the United States, Ethiopia, and France. He has also participated in numerous international engagements involving the African Union, the United Nations, and other multilateral institutions.
At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he held various leadership positions and undertook special assignments in key government agencies. His contributions to public service earned him recognition, including a Presidential Commendation in 2023 following his appointment as Ambassador-in-Situ in 2022.
Observers believe his wealth of experience will play a crucial role in advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives and strengthening bilateral relations with Ghana, one of Nigeria’s most important partners within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
His appointment comes at a time when both countries are seeking deeper collaboration in regional integration, economic cooperation, migration management, and security initiatives aimed at promoting stability across West Africa.
