NDC Warns Politicians Against Defection, Says Seats Could Be Lost

The National Democratic Coalition has warned elected officials and political aspirants against defecting from the political parties under which they secured their mandates, insisting that such actions could lead to the loss of their seats under constitutional provisions.
The group stressed that politicians who were elected on the platform of a political party owe their mandate primarily to the party and the electorate that voted for them. According to the coalition, the growing trend of political defections has weakened democratic values and undermined the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.
Speaking on the issue, NDC leaders argued that public office holders who abandon their parties after elections should be prepared to relinquish the positions they attained through those platforms. They maintained that party loyalty and adherence to democratic principles remain essential for political stability and good governance.
The coalition also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the judiciary, and other relevant institutions to strictly enforce constitutional provisions relating to party defections. It noted that consistent enforcement would help discourage political opportunism and strengthen public confidence in the democratic process.
According to the group, the practice of switching political parties for personal or strategic reasons has contributed to voter disillusionment and political uncertainty. The coalition called on politicians to prioritize ideology, accountability, and service to the people rather than personal ambition.
The warning comes amid increasing political realignments and consultations across the country as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections. Analysts believe the period leading to the elections may witness a fresh wave of defections as politicians seek favourable platforms to pursue their ambitions.
The NDC emphasized that respect for party structures and electoral mandates is critical to the growth of Nigeria’s democracy. It urged political leaders to act responsibly and uphold the trust reposed in them by voters.
The coalition reaffirmed its commitment to promoting democratic accountability and encouraging reforms that will strengthen Nigeria’s electoral and governance systems ahead of future elections.
