Appeal Court Constitutes Election Tribunal Ahead of Ekiti Governorship Poll
The Court of Appeal has constituted a Governorship Election Petition Tribunal for the forthcoming Ekiti State governorship election, a move aimed at ensuring the speedy resolution of any post-election disputes that may arise from the poll.
The tribunal was established in line with constitutional provisions that require election petition panels to be in place before governorship elections. The development is expected to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process and guarantee prompt adjudication of election-related cases after the exercise.
According to judicial authorities, the tribunal will be responsible for hearing and determining petitions filed by candidates, political parties, or other stakeholders who may challenge the outcome of the election. The panel is expected to commence operations immediately after the governorship poll scheduled for June 2026.
The constitution of the tribunal comes as political activities intensify across Ekiti State, with major political parties concluding campaigns and mobilizing supporters ahead of the election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has also continued consultations with political parties and other stakeholders to ensure a peaceful, credible, and transparent electoral process.
Legal experts have described the tribunal’s establishment as a critical component of Nigeria’s electoral justice system, noting that it provides a lawful avenue for aggrieved parties to seek redress rather than resorting to self-help or actions capable of undermining democratic stability.
Observers believe the early constitution of the tribunal demonstrates the judiciary’s preparedness to handle any legal challenges arising from the election and reinforces confidence in the nation’s democratic institutions.
As Ekiti voters prepare to elect their next governor, stakeholders have continued to urge political actors to conduct issue-based campaigns, respect electoral laws, and maintain peace before, during, and after the election.
The Ekiti governorship election is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s key off-cycle elections and is expected to attract significant national attention due to its political significance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
