INEC Receives Membership Registers From 22 Political Parties Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that all 22 registered political parties in Nigeria have successfully submitted their membership registers ahead of the 2027 general elections in compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
INEC disclosed that the submissions were completed following an extension earlier granted to political parties after concerns were raised over the initial deadline contained in the revised timetable for the 2027 elections.
According to a statement issued by the Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, all political parties completed the submission process on or before May 8, 2026, ahead of the extended deadline of May 10, 2026.
The electoral commission explained that the extension became necessary after consultations with political parties during a stakeholders’ meeting where concerns were expressed about the earlier timeline for submission of membership registers.
INEC had earlier shifted the deadline from April 21 to May 10, 2026, in line with Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026, which requires political parties to submit their membership registers at least 21 days before conducting primaries.
The commission further stated that political parties are permitted to conduct their primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026, as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
INEC assured Nigerians that the submitted membership registers would undergo verification processes in accordance with electoral laws and established guidelines to ensure transparency, compliance and credibility in the electoral process.
The development marks another major milestone in preparations for the 2027 elections, as political parties continue consultations, screenings and primary election activities across the country.
The electoral body also reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections nationwide ahead of the next general polls.
