Court Admits Newspaper Publications as Evidence in Godwin Emefiele Trial
An Abuja High Court has admitted several newspaper publications and certification receipts from the National Library of Nigeria as evidence in the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
The documents were admitted by Justice Maryanne Anenih during proceedings in the case filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against the former apex bank chief.
The prosecution tendered copies of newspaper publications alongside certification receipts through a subpoenaed witness, Jegede Oluwasegun, an official of the National Library of Nigeria. The witness confirmed the authenticity of the documents presented before the court.
Emefiele is currently facing charges relating to alleged disobedience to lawful directives and actions said to have caused injury to public interest. However, the former CBN governor has denied all allegations and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
During the hearing, counsel to the EFCC, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), presented the materials before the court without objection from Emefiele’s defence team led by Olalekan Ojo (SAN).
Under cross-examination, the witness clarified that he was not the author of the newspaper reports but appeared before the court to verify and present the certified documents obtained from the National Library.
The case is among several legal proceedings involving the former CBN governor following his departure from office amid allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of office.
