FG Support, Grassroots Development and Athlete Welfare Driving Nigeria’s Sports Growth – NSC DG
The Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, has attributed Nigeria’s recent progress in sports to sustained federal government support, grassroots development initiatives, and improved athlete welfare.
Speaking on ongoing reforms in the sector, Olopade said consistent funding and strategic backing from the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have helped reposition Nigerian sports for growth and global competitiveness.
He explained that grassroots development and athlete welfare remain the key drivers of what he described as a “sports renaissance” in the country, noting that these efforts are building a strong pipeline of talent while ensuring athletes receive adequate support.
Olopade further disclosed that the commission has introduced measures to improve athlete welfare, including financial support and educational assistance for both elite and emerging talents. According to him, these interventions are designed to boost morale and enhance performance across various sports.
He added that the impact of these initiatives is already visible, with more young athletes emerging from grassroots programmes and preparing to compete at national and international levels.
The NSC boss emphasized that sustained investment, policy consistency, and athlete-focused programmes will be crucial to restoring Nigeria’s status as a leading force in global sports.
