Jigawa, UNICEF Intensify Polio Campaign, Target 1.5 Million Children
The Jigawa State Government, in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has stepped up efforts to tackle polio by launching an expanded immunisation campaign aimed at over 1.5 million children.
The exercise, coordinated by the state’s Primary Healthcare Development Agency, is designed to reach children under the age of five across all 27 local government areas and numerous wards. Health authorities say the campaign is critical to boosting immunity and preventing the spread of the virus.
To achieve wide coverage, thousands of trained health workers and volunteers have been deployed, including house-to-house mobilisers and outreach teams. Vaccination posts have also been established in strategic locations to ensure no child is left out.
Officials noted that although progress has been made in reducing cases of circulating polio variants, the disease still poses a threat in some areas. They emphasised the need for sustained commitment and community participation to completely eradicate polio.
Parents and caregivers have been urged to take advantage of the free vaccination exercise, as stakeholders continue to advocate stronger collaboration among government agencies, community leaders, and the media.
The campaign is part of ongoing efforts to eliminate polio and safeguard the health of children across the state and beyond.
