FIRS Records Historic Growth Under Adedeji’s Leadership
By Akin Alade
Over the past three years, Nigeria’s revenue administration has witnessed a remarkable transformation under the leadership of Zacch Adedeji, whose tenure at the helm of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has been marked by record-breaking performance, sweeping reforms, and renewed confidence in the nation’s fiscal system.
Since assuming office, Dr. Adedeji has pursued a clear vision—to reposition the nation’s tax authority as a modern, efficient, and globally competitive institution capable of driving sustainable economic growth.
Record-Breaking Revenue Performance
One of the most visible indicators of the agency’s progress has been its impressive revenue generation. Under Adedeji’s leadership, FIRS has recorded some of the highest tax collections in Nigeria’s history.
In 2023 alone, the agency generated more than ₦12 trillion in tax revenue, surpassing its annual target and reinforcing the importance of tax administration as a key pillar of national development. By 2024, revenue collection had surged significantly, reaching over ₦21 trillion—another milestone that highlighted the growing effectiveness of the agency’s reforms.
These achievements have strengthened government finances and provided increased resources for infrastructure, social services, and economic programmes across the country.
Shifting Nigeria Away from Oil Dependence
A major aspect of the reforms introduced by Adedeji has been the deliberate focus on expanding non-oil revenue sources.
For decades, Nigeria’s economy has relied heavily on crude oil earnings, leaving government finances vulnerable to fluctuations in global oil prices. However, under the current leadership of FIRS, the agency has intensified efforts to strengthen tax collection from the non-oil sector.
As a result, non-oil revenue has grown significantly, accounting for a large percentage of total tax collections in recent years. This shift is widely seen as a strategic step toward building a more diversified and resilient economy.
Digital Transformation of Tax Administration
Another key achievement of the agency during this period has been the aggressive digitalisation of tax processes.
Through innovative platforms and technology-driven solutions, FIRS has simplified tax registration, filing, and payment procedures. These reforms have reduced bureaucracy, improved transparency, and enhanced compliance among taxpayers while also strengthening operational efficiency within the agency.
Institutional Reforms and Administrative Efficiency
Beyond revenue generation and digital innovation, Dr. Adedeji’s leadership has also focused on strengthening the internal structure of the agency.
FIRS has undergone strategic organisational restructuring designed to improve coordination, streamline operations, and enhance productivity across its departments. Staff training and welfare have also received greater attention, creating a more motivated workforce capable of meeting the agency’s ambitious goals.
Interestingly, despite the remarkable milestones recorded under his watch, Dr. Adedeji is known for his humility and deep sense of gratitude. A close associate once revealed that the FIRS chairman attributed the successes recorded by the agency not to his personal efforts alone but to the support system around him.
According to the associate, Adedeji once remarked that the credit for the progress made so far should go to Bola Ahmed Tinubu for giving him the opportunity to serve the country, the dedication and cooperation of the staff of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, and above all, the grace of God.
Expanding the Tax Base
Another important initiative pursued during the period has been the expansion of Nigeria’s tax base.
Through policy reforms and improved taxpayer engagement, the agency has worked to bring more individuals and businesses into the tax net while simplifying compliance procedures. The objective is to create a fairer system where more citizens contribute to national development through taxation.
Strengthening Nigeria’s Fiscal Future
The cumulative effect of these reforms has been a stronger and more reliable revenue system for Nigeria.
Economists often emphasize that no nation can achieve sustainable development without a functional and efficient tax administration. By strengthening the capacity of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Dr. Zacch Adedeji’s leadership has helped reinforce one of the most critical pillars of Nigeria’s economic foundation.
Today, many observers see the ongoing reforms at FIRS as part of a broader effort to reposition Nigeria’s economy for long-term growth.
For Adedeji, however, the mission goes beyond numbers and statistics. It is about building an institution that will continue to serve Nigeria effectively long after individual tenures have ended.
