Delta Gov Oborevwori Defends Defection to APC, Says Move Aimed at Progress, Not PDP Destruction

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has defended his administration’s recent political shift from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting the move was a strategic step toward advancing development, not a plot to dismantle his former party.

Speaking at a press briefing in Asaba on Thursday through the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, the governor said the decision was informed by “political realities” ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Our desire is not to kill PDP but to move Delta forward, and so we changed our driving pattern,” Aniagwu said.
“It was obvious that PDP won’t make headway in the forthcoming 2027 election, and so [there was] need to move to APC.”

The commissioner highlighted what he described as “bold and remarkable achievements” in the governor’s first two years, including road infrastructure, healthcare upgrades, security enhancements, and housing initiatives.

He noted that the administration had significantly reduced travel time between Asaba and Ughelli to 1 hour 45 minutes, thanks to new road projects.

“Anyone suggesting that the administration is losing grip is far from the truth. We remain committed to delivering results,” Aniagwu asserted.

As part of activities marking the government’s second anniversary, a number of major projects will be commissioned, including:

  • Beneku Bridge
  • Ishiagu-Ewulu Road and Bridge
  • Upper and Lower Erejuwa Roads in Warri
  • Okpanam erosion control
  • Otolokpo–Boji-Boji Owa and Akumazi-Owere-Olubor Road
  • Obi-Ibabu Road

The state has also upgraded medical facilities with the installation of new equipment at the Asaba Specialist Hospital, Warri Central Hospital, and DELSUTH Oghara, part of efforts to curb medical tourism.

On security, Aniagwu said the state is actively partnering with federal agencies. “The Inspector General of Police was recently in Delta to commission new operational vehicles,” he said, adding that urban street lighting has also improved.

Regarding rising housing costs in Asaba and other towns, Aniagwu revealed a statewide housing scheme is in motion, with 50 residential units planned for each LGA. The pilot phase is ongoing in Ozoro, Owa-Oyibu, and Kwale, featuring 30 three-bedroom and 20 two-bedroom flats per location.
