Afegbua, Nigeria’s First Female Senator, Is Dead

 

Senator Franca Afegbua, the first elected female Senator in the Nigerian Senate, has passed on at ripe aged of 81.

The female history making senator She was died in Benin City, Edo State, capital, according to reliable media source. The media source, also reported that the distinguished law maker died at a private hospital after a brief illness in the last months of her existence on earth.

Meanwhile, late Senator Afegbua’s death has been confirmed by her family.

One of her younger brothers, Kassim Afegbua, who followed her footsteps in politics confirmed her elder sister’s demise.

Kassim Afegbu, is a member of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, PCC. He was a one time Commissioner for Information in Edo State, under the former State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole

Afegbua told reporters that his elder sister died on Sunday morning, and that her body has been taken to the mortuary of University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). Benin City, Edo State capital.

The late female pioneering senator Afegbua, was elected Senator in 1983, during the second republic, under the umbrella of then ruling party, the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN). She represented the defunct Bendel North Senatorial constituency of the defunct Bendel State, in the National Assembly.

The passionate lawmaker who inspired many female politicians to greater success served in the Senate for only three months ( from October to December 1983), before the military coup led by present Nigerian President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, drew the curtain of Second Republic to an end with the unexpected coup on December 31, 1983, morning while excitedly Nigerians were preparing for an eventful crossover to the new year.
