APC Tightens Grip on Zamfara Assembly as Speaker, 12 PDP Lawmakers Defect

A significant political realignment has taken place in Zamfara State following the defection of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Bilyaminu Moriki, along with 12 lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Speaker announced the development during plenary after officially submitting letters confirming their resignation from the PDP.
The mass defection follows the recent political shift by Governor Dauda Lawal, who also aligned with the APC, indicating a broader consolidation of power within the state.
Moriki explained that the decision was reached after consultations with stakeholders and constituents, stressing that the move was necessary to ensure unity of purpose and accelerate development in Zamfara State. He added that aligning with the ruling party at the federal level would enhance cooperation and attract more benefits to the state.
The lawmakers are expected to be formally received into the APC by the party’s national leadership, with Vice President Kashim Shettima set to play a prominent role in the event.
With this development, the APC now controls all 24 seats in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, marking a decisive shift in the state’s political landscape.
