2027: Gbenga Hashim Pushes Opposition Alliance to Challenge APC Dominance
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has intensified efforts to build a broad opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning against the خطر of a one-party system in Nigeria.
Hashim made this known in Abuja during a meeting with leaders of the Accord Party, led by its National Chairman, Maxwell Mgbudem. The meeting is part of ongoing consultations aimed at uniting opposition parties across the country.
He stressed that collaboration among political stakeholders is essential to preserving democratic balance and ensuring Nigerians have credible alternatives at the polls. According to him, continued disunity among opposition parties could further strengthen the dominance of the All Progressives Congress.
Hashim also raised concerns over internal challenges within opposition parties, noting that such issues weaken their effectiveness and limit their ability to provide strong competition. He warned that this trend could undermine Nigeria’s multi-party democracy if not urgently addressed.
He further criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission over its election timetable, arguing that the schedule for party primaries does not align with provisions of the Electoral Act and may constrain proper party preparations.
The engagement with Accord Party leaders follows similar consultations with other political actors as part of efforts to build a united front ahead of 2027.
Hashim reiterated that protecting Nigeria’s democracy requires collective action among stakeholders committed to accountability, fairness, and a competitive political system, adding that discussions toward a coalition will continue.
