2027: APGA Moves to Protect Anambra Base as Party Draws Line Between Itself and Obi’s NDC

2027: APGA Moves to Protect Anambra Base as Party Draws Line Between Itself and Obi’s NDC
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has intensified efforts to consolidate its political base in Anambra ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning its members against supporting the presidential bid of Peter Obi and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The party’s latest position highlights the growing political contest over APGA’s traditional influence in Anambra as parties and political actors begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections.
APGA National Publicity Secretary, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, in a statement titled “A Betrayal Alert for Ndi APGA,” urged party members to remain loyal to APGA and resist what the party described as attempts to weaken its political structure.
Opara questioned Obi’s relationship with APGA, alleging that the former Anambra governor has supported candidates against APGA in successive electoral cycles despite having previously governed the state on the party’s platform.
According to APGA, the disagreement is not merely about the 2027 presidential election but about the survival and continued relevance of the party in Anambra. The party therefore urged its members to put APGA’s interests ahead of political alliances outside its structure.
APGA also rejected suggestions of an alliance or power-sharing arrangement between the party and the NDC. Opara said there was “no formal or informal consultation or agreement” between APGA and the NDC on power sharing.
The party further defended its current relationship with the Federal Government, saying its support for President Bola Tinubu goes beyond the traditional practice of working with the party at the centre. APGA said its position was also influenced by what it described as the Tinubu administration’s commitment to infrastructure development in the Southeast.
The warning comes amid increasing political realignment ahead of 2027, with Peter Obi now seeking the presidency under the NDC platform after previous political affiliations with APGA, PDP, Labour Party and the African Democratic Congress.
For APGA, the immediate challenge appears to be maintaining its grassroots structure and political identity in Anambra while national opposition alliances continue to take shape. The party has consequently called on its members to remain united and defend what it described as its political fortress.
The development adds another dimension to the emerging 2027 political contest, particularly in the Southeast, where the strength of established regional political structures could play a significant role in determining how votes are distributed in the presidential and other elections.
APGA concluded its message with a reaffirmation of its Anambra base, declaring that “Anambra is APGA” and urging members to protect the party’s interests as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
