NASU Warns Tinubu: Implement University Workers’ Agreement or Risk Losing Massive Electoral Suppor
The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that failure to conclude and fully implement the renegotiation agreement with university-based unions could cost the government significant political support from workers.
The union expressed growing frustration over the prolonged delay in finalising the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement between the Federal Government and non-teaching staff unions in Nigerian universities. According to NASU, the continued delay has created dissatisfaction among workers who feel sidelined despite their critical role in the university system.
NASU stressed that non-academic staff are essential to the smooth operation of universities, handling key responsibilities such as administration, finance, and infrastructure support. The union noted that while academic staff have seen progress in their negotiations, non-teaching staff are still waiting for their concerns to be addressed, creating a sense of imbalance.
The union warned that university workers represent a large voting bloc and play influential roles within their communities. It emphasized that their perception of the government could directly impact political outcomes, especially as the country gradually approaches another election cycle.
NASU therefore urged the Federal Government to act swiftly by concluding the renegotiation process and implementing all agreed terms without further delay. The union maintained that doing so would not only restore confidence among workers but also help sustain industrial peace across Nigerian universities.
It added that failure to address these concerns promptly could trigger unrest in the education sector and weaken the trust workers have in the current administration.
