The Federal Government has commended the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum, for significantly expanding technical and vocational education and training in the state, calling the effort a positive step toward empowering young Nigerians with practical skills.
About 3,000 trainees graduated from nine Vocational Enterprise Institutes and centres across Borno State, where they received training in various trades and skills. They also received starter packs and ₦100,000 entrepreneurship grants to support their transition into business or gainful employment.
The praise was conveyed by the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, who described the governor’s initiative as a major contribution to equipping young people with practical, employable skills that meet industry demands.
According to the minister, the programme aligns with the national agenda focused on youth empowerment and economic inclusion, emphasising a blend of 80% practical training and 20% theory to ensure trainees acquire hands‑on experience relevant to real-world jobs.
The Federal Ministry of Education also highlighted plans to establish a national TVET job portal to link skilled graduates with employment opportunities and provide access to resources such as affordable credit facilities.
Officials said this initiative forms part of a broader nationwide effort aimed at offering about 250,000 training opportunities to youths across the country, with more than 180,000 already enrolled in training programmes under the scheme.
The expanded focus on technical and vocational education reflects a strategic attempt to reduce unemployment, align skills with market needs, and strengthen the workforce in Borno and beyond.
