PDP North Central Zone Disowns Purported Removal of National Chairman Damagum
…Calls for calm, warns against political coup within the party
The North Central Zonal Working and Executive Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has distanced itself from the reported removal of the party’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, describing the development as illegal, laughable, and a disgraceful attempt to destabilize the party.
In a communiqué issued after its emergency meeting held on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, the zonal leadership said it convened to review recent happenings within the party, especially the crisis that erupted following the judgment delivered by Justice Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division.
The committee noted that while some disciplinary actions, including suspensions, might have been intended to enforce internal order, such sensitive issues require wider consultation with party elders, former leaders, and state chapters before any final decisions are made.
“At this critical time, the National Working Committee must focus on rebuilding public confidence and reassuring our teeming supporters of its commitment to conducting a credible and transparent national convention before the expiration of its tenure,” the communiqué stated.
The zonal body expressed concern that certain individuals within the PDP are bent on undermining the forthcoming national convention and manipulating the micro-zoning arrangements to shortchange the North Central region.
It warned party members against falling into what it described as the traps of “selfish and egocentric politicians” determined to destroy the unity and future of the PDP.
The communiqué strongly rejected the alleged impeachment of Ambassador Umar Damagum by four members of the National Working Committee and the purported appointment of Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed as Acting National Chairman.
“This action is not only unlawful but also capable of setting a dangerous precedent that could encourage judicial manipulation, as witnessed during the 2023 general elections,” the statement read.
The PDP North Central leadership also condemned attempts to drag the zone into the political scheming of some individuals, describing the alleged appointment of Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed was both “insulting and unacceptable.”
It urged Hon. Mohammed dissociated himself from any moves that could further deepen the internal crisis rocking the party.
The communiqué further expressed worry over what it termed the increasing misuse of security and government institutions to promote undemocratic activities.
“This is unbecoming of a civilized democratic society,” the zone warned, while calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to direct security agencies to avoid aiding or abetting any form of political or military coup, describing both as crimes against democracy.”
The North Central PDP leaders advised all members of the party to remain calm and disciplined, assuring them that the current political turmoil will soon pass.
“Our great party has survived many storms in the past and emerged stronger. This will not be an exception. Whatever has a beginning must surely have an end,” the communiqué concluded.
