Oriire School Abduction: Survivor Recounts Terrifying Moment Students Shouted ‘Bandits, Bandits’
One of the survivors of the Oriire school abduction has shared a chilling account of how armed bandits stormed the school, describing the terrifying moments when students screamed, “Bandits, bandits,” as the attackers launched their assault.
The survivor recalled that what initially appeared to be a normal school day quickly turned into chaos when heavily armed men invaded the school premises, sending students and staff into panic. According to the eyewitness, frightened pupils ran in different directions while others sought shelter in classrooms and nearby buildings.
“I heard students shouting, ‘Bandits, bandits,’ and everyone started running for safety. There was confusion everywhere,” the survivor recounted, adding that the attackers overpowered the victims before leading them into the forest.
The victim described the ordeal in captivity as traumatic, saying the abductees endured fear, uncertainty and harsh conditions throughout the period they were held hostage. Despite the difficult circumstances, the survivor expressed gratitude to security personnel whose coordinated rescue efforts eventually secured their freedom.
The rescue operation, carried out after weeks of intelligence gathering and coordinated security action, involved personnel from the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies. Authorities have continued efforts to track down those responsible for the abduction and strengthen security around schools to prevent similar incidents.
The mass abduction of pupils and teachers from the Oriire community sparked nationwide concern and renewed calls for stronger measures to protect schools, especially in vulnerable rural communities. Parents, education stakeholders and civil society organisations have urged governments at all levels to improve intelligence gathering, increase security presence and invest in technologies capable of preventing future attacks.
Security experts say the successful rescue of the victims demonstrates the importance of inter-agency collaboration but stress that preventing future kidnappings should remain a national priority.
As investigations continue, the survivor’s emotional testimony has highlighted the psychological impact of school abductions and reinforced calls for sustained efforts to ensure that every child can learn in a safe and secure environment.
