The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has suspended six prominent party members, including the party’s only elected governor, Alex Otti of Abia State, amid ongoing tensions within the party.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the faction’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk, revealed that the decision followed the conclusions of a five-man Disciplinary Committee set up by the National Executive Committee (NEC) on May 2, 2025. The committee investigated Governor Otti and other party members over allegations of anti-party activities.
Following an exhaustive deliberation by the National Executive, the following members were suspended indefinitely with immediate effect:
- Dr. Alex Otti (Governor of Abia State)
- Senator Ireti Kingibe
- Senator Darlington Nwokocha
- Hon. Victor Afam Ogene
- Hon. Amobi Ogah
- Hon. Seyi Sowunmi
The statement emphasized that these suspended members would no longer represent the party in any capacity, urging institutions such as the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, National Assembly, INEC, and security agencies to take note of the decision.
The party also clarified that Nenadi Usman, who is not a registered member of the Labour Party but a supporter of its 2023 presidential candidate, was not included in the suspension list. The statement went on to question Usman’s background, urging her to explain how she acquired significant assets across Nigeria and abroad, including her radio station in Kaduna and plantations in Cameroon.
In addition to the suspensions, the Labour Party reaffirmed its position against political coalitions or mergers ahead of the 2027 general elections. The statement reiterated that the party will contest the 2027 elections as a standalone entity and will not entertain further discussions on the matter.
