Women’s Empowerment Crucial to Achieving Sustainable Development Goals — UN
The United Nations has reiterated that empowering women and advancing gender equality are essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), calling on governments and key stakeholders to prioritise inclusive policies that support women’s growth and participation.
The global body noted that women’s empowerment goes beyond being a single goal, describing it as a catalyst for the successful implementation of all 17 SDGs. It explained that when women have equal access to education, economic opportunities, and leadership roles, societies experience more rapid and sustainable progress.
According to the UN, gender equality plays a significant role in addressing major global challenges, including poverty reduction, improved healthcare, quality education, and economic development. Closing the gender gap, it said, would enable nations to maximise their human potential and strengthen economic resilience.
The organisation also stressed the importance of investing in women’s economic empowerment through access to finance, skill acquisition, and entrepreneurial support. Such efforts, it added, are vital in ensuring that women contribute meaningfully to national and global development.
Furthermore, it called for stronger collaboration between governments, the private sector, and civil society to eliminate structural barriers limiting women’s participation across various sectors.
The United Nations reaffirmed that achieving gender equality is fundamental to building a just, inclusive, and sustainable world, emphasising that meaningful progress cannot be achieved if women are left behind.
